Keywords: Internet of Things, Design Thinking, Entrepreneurship, Agriculture, Digital transformation, Multidisciplinary approach, Smart farming
Affiliation: EEA Grants, ANPCDEFP 20-COP-0019 ESAYEP
"Working together for a green, competitive and inclusive Europe"
The main objective of this project is to build the capacities and to facilitate the deployment of digital technologies in agriculture. More precisely is based on transferring digital skills, knowledge and technologies from the Computer Science domain toward Agriculture, Food Processes and Safety improving efficiency, increasing the wellbeing of the society and reducing the environmental footprint. By exploiting the potential of digital technologies (IoT systems, robotics, automation, software applications) will accelerate the Agriculture modernization and will improve the Food Processes like:
o Improved efficiency / crops, modern irrigation practices, crop management products, mobile technology, fertilizer and mechanization management
o Sustainability energy availability that implies new methods for food process monitoring and control

Context of project
Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu (LBUS) Romania and University of South-Eastern Norway (USN) have already gained substantial experience from inter-institutional collaboration. Since 2014 they have collaborated in more than 5 EEA projects, resulting in at least 5 scientific research papers published at international conferences under the topics like smart cities, embedded systems and IoT. LBUS expertise on embedded systems and Erasmus+ Knowledge Alliance projects is extended with USN research competence focused on sensors, smart cities, smart agriculture, business and management.
Short description of the results (including the intellectual outputs)
The main deliverable of the project will be 2 summer schools arranged in Norway and in Sibiu Romania bringing students from the 2 countries together, to work on IoT related projects. It combines lectures on fundamental and applied aspects of IoT with hands-on tutorials and experimentation, providing the participants with a solid understanding of how the IoT fits within the wider context of agriculture, and experience to make students able to implement a self-chosen project related to data collection, analytics and presentation. The intellectual output consists in the publication of 2 scientific papers at conferences focusing on using IoT, AI, GA to digitalization and modernization in Agriculture practice.
The teachers, selected both from Computer Science and Agriculture and Food Engineering domains, 4 from LBUS Romania and 3 from USN Norway, will bring their expertise, but also share and discuss good practices and experiences with other teachers about digitalisation in agriculture. The projects will be done by groups of students developing solutions to solve real problems e.g., crop irrigation planning, monitoring and plant disease detection, soil texture mapping, neural network design for alcoholic fermentation process, automation of harvesting using mobile robots and robotic arms, etc.
